If you grew up in Canada, especially the prairies, you know Saskatoon berries (or Serviceberries). Typically seen growing in ditches along roadsides or field borders, the texture of these berries are dependent on weather conditions. Saskatoon berries have a mild taste described as a cross between a blueberry and a pear. The seeds are large (about the size of a flax seed) and edible.
Historically, First Peoples gathered the berries to eat fresh, and some tribes made pemmican with them, which is a dried food made by mixing mashed dried meat and berries together and laying it flat to dry. Pemmican was then eaten while traveling much as hikers today eat granola bars for energy. Prairie homestead kitchens are well known for Saskatoon pie and it is especially good with a scoop of ice cream.
Saskatoon bushes enjoy the consistent watering they get in our field. As a result, our berries are very large and juicy. If you endured chewy, dry berries as a child, you will be amazed at how truly delicious our Saskatoon berries are.
